About Elizabeth Bartlett

Elizabeth Bartlett is a former psychiatrist who graduated from New York Medical College — where she was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society — and completed her internship and residency at Hillside and Queens Hospitals in Queens, New York. During this time, she also received extensive training in psychoanalytic psychotherapy. After completing her residency, she started a private practice in Maine.

A New Understanding

Elizabeth spent a decade in private practice a psychiatrist, but over the course of her career, she became convinced her that many patients with everyday problems were being over-diagnosed and over-medicated. The mental illness industry seemed to disempower people by encouraging an attitude that their problems were "disorders" and could only be managed with medication. Ultimately, she took time away from her practice to work through her own issues and came to understand that, like herself, many of her patients' problems were the result of childhood trauma, which psychiatry in general disavowed.

Elizabeth was able to overcome her own issues after rejecting mainstream mental illness treatment and learning to empower herself. She came to believe that empowerment is the road to resolution of behavioral and emotional concerns. This led her to begin studying life coaching and become certified as a life coach. She is not currently practicing psychiatry and will not diagnose clients nor discuss specifics about medication.

Shamanic Training

Elizabeth has also spent a number of years apprenticing and becoming a shaman of the eagle totem. The eagle symbolizes healing, creativity, and spirituality, and Elizabeth feels greatly honored to be given this totem. Becoming a shaman has opened Elizabeth to mindfulness and connection with other people and our environment. It has enhanced her belief that empowerment through mutual discussion and support is highly effective.

The Story of Ahes

Ahes (pronounced AH-heys) is a minor pagan goddess from Brittany, France. For hundreds of years, the local population prayed to her for a good fishing harvest and safe return from the sea. The Catholic Church attempted to turn her into a monster, but she resisted and is still celebrated today. Her celebration day is Elizabeth's birthday, and Elizabeth feels a close kinship with Ahes. Over many years, abusers attempted to turn her into a monster — but she, like Ahes, resisted and continues to thrive.
